Deciding               to               get               a               master's               degree               in               creativity               studies               from               S.U.N.Y               Buffalo               State               is               one               of               the               best               decisions               I               have               ever               made.

Besides               being               fun               and               engaging,               the               program               has               helped               me               build               connections               to               creativity               facilitators               and               researchers               located               in               Buffalo.

The               creativity               studies               program               has               increased               my               personal               creativity               and               creative               leadership               as               well               providing               valuable               insights               into               my               personality               and               life.
Studying               creativity               is               not               about               being               weird,               unique,               or               unconventional               (or               doing               drugs).

It               is               simply               the               ability               to               create               ideas               that               are               both               novel               and               useful               in               a               systematic               and               deliberate               fashion.
               Deciding               to               study               creativity               studies
Initially,               I               was               reluctant               to               go               back               to               school               for               a               master's               degree.

I               was               still               paying               my               student               loans               for               my               law               degree.

Additionally,               sitting               through               potentially               tedious               classes               did               not               appeal               to               me.
However,               when               I               learned               about               the               master's               degree               in               creativity               studies               through               S.U.N.Y               campus               in               Buffalo,               I               was               very               excited.
The               master's               degree               took               place               about               80%               online,               which               I               liked               since               I               have               a               full-time               job               as               in-house               counsel.

The               remaining               classes               took               place               in               one-week               blocks               at               Buffalo,               which               I               could               take               with               vacation               time.

The               program               started               with               two               classes               at               Buffalo.

These               were               a               great               way               to               become               acquainted               with               my               professors               and               classmates.

The               remaining               in-person               classes               took               place               for               one               or               two               weeks               each               year               in               June.
               Creativity               studies               at               S.U.N.Y.

Buffalo               State
Buffalo               state               has               the               distinction               of               having               the               first               center               devoted               to               creativity               studies               in               the               United               States.

The               creativity               studies               program               is               located               in               its               own               department               -               separate               from               business,               education,               or               psychology               programs.
This               has               allowed               the               creativity               professors               at               Buffalo               State               to               focus               their               efforts               entirely               on               studying,               teaching,               and               researching               creativity.

The               program               focuses               on               the               creative               problem               solving               method,               developed               by               the               advertising               executive               Alex               Osborn               and               professor               Sidney               Parnes,               as               well               as               creative               leadership.
My               experiences               studying               creativity               and               creative               leadership               at               Buffalo               State
I               am               a               professional               learner               with               two               (soon               three)               degrees               that               will               have               attended               five               different               schools               (via               two               transfers).

So               when               I               say               that               studying               creativity               at               Buffalo               state               was               by               far               the               most               rewarding               experience,               you'll               have               some               context.
What               made               Buffalo               State               is               the               level               of               interaction               in               classroom               discussions,               especially               for               the               first               two               classes               in               Buffalo.

Class               was               extremely               informative               and               entertaining.

But               more               importantly,               I               learned               to               think               creatively               to               an               extent               I               never               imagined               possible.
Additionally,               I               gained               valuable               insights               related               to               my               own               life,               personality,               and               attitude.

For               instance,               as               a               novelty-loving               divergent               personality,               I               love               to               learn               and               do               new               things.

At               Buffalo               State,               I               learned               about               convergent               thinking,               the               neglect               pairing               to               divergent               thinking.

By               applying               divergent               and               convergent               thinking               sequentially               (rather               than               in               tandem),               I               have               greatly               increased               my               capacity               for               creative               thinking.

Convergent               thinking               has               also               helped               me               develop               creative               discipline.
               Creativity               community               in               Buffalo
The               best               part               of               studying               creativity               at               Buffalo,               however,               was               making               valuable               professional               and               personal               relationships.

The               center               has               extensive               connections               to               Creative               Problem               Solving               Institute               (CPSI).

Additionally,               the               creativity               community               makes               Buffalo               their               home.
The               only               downside               to               Buffalo               State               is               that               the               master's               program               is               very               focused               on               the               creative               problem               solving               method,               training               and               facilitation.

However,               the               program               continues               to               add               more               classes               and               resources               in               fields               like               organizational               creativity,               product               development,               and               innovation               management.
Overall,               I               have               been               very               pleased               with               studying               creativity               and               creative               leadership               at               Buffalo               State               and               I               recommend               that               others               consider               the               program               as               well.
